Giving people a voice – and making sure it’s heard – is something POhWER does every day. We’re all about promoting equality, challenging unfairness and giving disadvantaged and vulnerable people access to high quality information, advice and advocacy services.
In Oxfordshire we are looking to recruit volunteers who share our core values and want to support vulnerable adults across Oxfordshire to be heard. Our community advocacy service is provided by volunteers who give their time to support their community.
Volunteer Community Advocates listen to their client and try to understand their needs, as well as support and empower them to resolve their issue. This might include making telephone calls, writing emails or letters with them or on their behalf, and supporting your client at meetings.
No previous experience of advocacy is necessary as full training is provided, however skills that make for good advocacy include the ability to:
– communicate sensitively and empathetically with clients with a range of needs
– non-judgemental about the client’s views, beliefs or situations
– communicate effectively with professionals and other organisations
– understand and establish working boundaries with clients
– have an understanding of IT systems and a willingness to use technology
If you are over 18 and would like to apply to be a Volunteer Community Advocate you can do this through our website https://www.pohwer.net/would-you-like-to-be-a-volunteer-community-advocate-in-oxfordshire
