Award Winning Builders – The Classic Barn Company
As award winning builders, The Classic Barn Company’s Room Above Outbuildings are accredited to The Guild of Master Craftsmen. They were also nominated and shortlisted in 2019 for the prestigious Build it Design Awards with their traditional handmade joinery that features in all their builds. One of The Classic Barn Company’s recent projects was constructing a new barn facility for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire. The facility was later visited by HRH The Princess Royal, who is president of the RDA. It’s interesting to learn that these classic outbuildings are designed and built for such a wide range of uses – from housing classic cars and glamorous vintage motor cycles to providing stabling and equestrian complexes for horses.
Outbuildings & Garages With Accommodation
It’s rather nice to know that outbuildings which are built and designed for entirely practical purposes can still have a very traditional air and be perfectly suited to their surroundings. The design team at The Classic Barn Company is dedicated to providing buildings that serve their purpose – but which look beautiful and draw upon both modern and traditional construction methods as well. Each oak-framed building is built using traditional mortise and tenon joints, a method which has been used for hundreds of years and which allows oak framing to settle whilst standing straight and sturdy. These joints, are of course, a beautifully detailed feature of each of the builds, emphasising that personal, hand-made feel. The hand-carved beams are definitely a desirable feature, and can be admired in the open-span roofs.
The Classic Barn Company has extended their range of oak framed garages and outbuildings to encompass Room Above, which adds habitable accommodation to the outbuilding. Director Andrew Guppy says “Our Room Above designs start from an initial modular room, and we then work with each client to produce a highly individual and bespoke room, or rooms, which will provide that extra accommodation they are looking for. Some of these rooms above are used for family visits and we’ve also noticed an increase in clients who are planning to use the new accommodation as an Airbnb space. It’s interesting to note that clients are looking at these rooms as an investment for the future as much as adding space and convenience to their homes. The room above designs have high-spec insulation and ventilation, so that the new space will be comfortable and entirely suited to the requirements of a busy household”.
Planning Details & Building Regulations
The Classic Barn Company can advise on all aspects of planning and regulations for Room Above Outbuildings, particularly if positioned in sensitive areas. They offer a full architectural design and planning service, which includes submitting drawings and plans to the local planning office, and the team can also advise and liaise with Building Regulations compliance as well. In general, Planning Permission regarding the construction of an oak barn is dependant upon its size and position with regards to the existing property or main house. Planning Permission isn’t always required, as structures can be built if they fall within the allowances and parameters of ‘Permitted Development’. Members of the team are available to talk through the possibilities and practicalities of the proposed project before an initial consultation and more detailed discussion takes place. Andrew Guppy points out that he is committed to providing beautiful oak buildings with the emphasis on authentic design and longevity. Their one-contractor accountability means that each project is individual, focussed and there are no-holds barred on their commitment to detail and client satisfaction. He says “We communicate closely with the local planning authorities and develop each individual design to fit their requirements whilst achieving exactly what our clients want. And we don’t stop there – we are always aspiring to add flair, ingenuity and a creative spark to the aesthetics to make each project attractive and unique”.
